For many in California, the start of a new year is a time of hope and promise for the future. People reflect on their life and consider what changes they would like to work toward. Unfortunately, car accidents can quickly shift a family’s focus. One family is now coping with the loss of their son after a tragic accident took his life.
Reports indicate that the accident happened at approximately 3 a.m. on New Year’s Day. Police note that the car the 21-year old was driving was struck by a vehicle driven by another 21-year-old male. Unfortunately, the victim died at the scene.
The driver of the second vehicle has since been arrested and now faces multiple criminal charges. Family members indicate that the victim, who was driving for Lyft at the time and was on his way to pick up a client when he was allegedly struck, was excited to work that night. His father said that he worked to help support their family.
This California family is facing an awful reality. As they cope with their grief, they may also face financial difficulties as they deal with loss of income and funeral expenses. Many who have lost a loved one in car accidents such as this choose to seek recompense in a civil court. If negligence can be proved — a claim that would be supported by a conviction of criminal charges stemming from an accident — a family could receive an award of damages that would allow them to focus on their emotional recovery rather than their financial stability.
