The dangers of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol are well known. Unfortunately, some people may not be as aware of the potential consequences of driving under the influence of a drug prescribed by a doctor, which can lead to serious car or motorcycle accidents. Although many prescriptions come with strongly worded warnings about the potential dangers of driving or operating heavy machinery while on the medicine, some may fail to take such warnings seriously. Police in California believe that a recent accident was caused by a man under the influence of prescription drugs.
The accident occurred in early June. Reports indicate that the driver of a pickup truck was attempting to maneuver a curve when he lost control. He allegedly struck a sports utility vehicle before careening head-on into a motorcycle.
The two people on the motorcycle died as a result of the collision. It is unclear if the driver of the pickup or occupants of the SUV suffered any injuries. However, the pickup driver has since been arrested because police believe he was under the influence of prescription drugs at the time of the accident.
Some people who are on a prescription that precludes driving may decide that they are safe to drive anyway, potentially ignoring the serious implications of their actions. Unfortunately, as a result of the alleged actions of this man in California, the loved ones of the deceased motorcyclist and his or her passenger are left mourning. They may also be facing a difficult financial future as a result of their loss. Many victims of motorcycle accidents — or their surviving family members in the event of a fatality — choose to seek legal recourse in a civil court. Such an action could ultimately result in an award of damages to help ease the financial ramifications created by another’s negligence.
