California man accused of domestic violence following dispute

by | May 3, 2016 | Domestic Violence, Firm News

Almost all couples have arguments. While many of these arguments remain relatively uneventful, some can result in individuals taking irrational actions — such as opening the doors of vehicles while traveling at high speeds on highways. Police in California believe that a woman did such a thing just prior to falling out of a vehicle during a dispute with her boyfriend. The boyfriend has since been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

The incident occurred one night in mid-April. According to reports, a woman and her 39-year-old boyfriend were riding in a car on a California highway. They reportedly were engaged in some sort of argument when the woman allegedly opened the car door and fell onto the highway. She was hit shortly afterward by another car that was unable to avoid her. She suffered a broken ankle as a result.

The boyfriend allegedly continued driving. Police say that he was arrested following the woman’s description of the events that happened. He is suspected of making threats and inflicting corporal punishment; however, there is reportedly no evidence to support that he pushed the woman out of the vehicle.

Domestic violence is a serious accusation and deserves a thorough investigation. However, it is important to remember that in all cases involving claims such as this that there are two sides to every story. Charges should not be based solely on one person’s version of events. In many cases, one person’s word, when there is no other corroborating evidence, is not sufficient to meet the high burden of proof required for a conviction. In order to ensure lawful treatment, many in California who face such charges seek the guidance of experienced defense attorneys to speak on their behalves.
