California teacher accused of sex crimes with student

California educators are often known for their dedication to their students. Many develop close relationships with those that they teach and coach that will have a lifelong impact on students. Unfortunately, these relationships can sometimes become misguided. Police in California have recently arrested a high school teacher, accusing him of multiple sex crimes involving a student.

Police say that they began an investigation into the teacher in Oct. 2015, but no word was given as to what sparked the investigation. The 45-year-old man is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a teenager either 14 or 15 years old. It is unclear if the alleged victim was a student at the school where he is employed.

Charges against the man include using a minor to produce obscene material and distributing obscene material depicting a minor as well as lewd acts with a child. The 45-year-old man, reportedly a track coach and Spanish teacher for Wasco Union High School, is being held on $200,000 bail. A representative for the school reports that the teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave and that the district is cooperating with the investigation.

Accusations of sex crimes are serious and deserve a thorough investigation. However, because of the seriousness of accusations, California authorities may become eager to bring about charges regardless of the facts or evidence in the case. In all criminal cases, those who are suspected or accused of a crime are considered not guilty until -- and only if -- proved otherwise. In many cases, prosecutors have difficulty meeting the high burden of proof required to obtain a conviction.
