Retired California worker charged with embezzlement

Many people in this country are aware that they have several rights when it comes to accusations or charges of criminal acts. However, most people may not have the knowledge required to fully respond to criminal charges. This especially applies when the charges are complex, such as in the case of embezzlement allegations. One California man will likely need legal assistance as he now faces almost 30 criminal counts.

The man was an employee who worked for one California city’s Department of Water and Power. In his role there, he was in charge of audio-visual jobs. Although his employment began in 1996, an anonymous tip made against the now 64-year-old man in 2012 launched an investigation. He retired in 2014, before the investigation could be completed.

The man now faces several charges. It is believed that he contracted A/V companies created and owned by friends. These friends then subcontracted the work to a company owned by the man now facing charges. Prosecutors allege that more than $4 million was embezzled in the scheme. If convicted of all 27 counts against him — including embezzlement by a public officer and conflict of interest — he could spend 20 years in prison.

A conviction in this case could ultimately result in the California man spending the rest of his life in prison as a result of the embezzlement and other criminal charges. Having an attorney with experience concerning cases such as this could impact the final outcome of the case. Such assistance could allow the man to make informed decisions about his case, including whether to accept any potential plea deals or fight to defend his innocence in court.
