California car accidents: 1 killed, several injured in collision

In many cases, it is difficult to guess when a tragedy will occur. For example, people are killed or injured every day in car accidents that they were powerless to prevent. Unfortunately, one community in California is likely still in shock over the news of an accident allegedly involving a man striking several pedestrians on a sidewalk.

Multiple people were injured in the accident that occurred one afternoon in June. Reports indicate a 65-year-old man was driving a sedan when his vehicle struck a 50-year-old man on the sidewalk near a bus stop. The car is believed to have continued traveling on the sidewalk before striking a utility pole and a group of five pedestrians that included three adult females and two young children.

Reports indicate that two of the pedestrians were dragged by the car. One of those victims was pronounced dead at the scene. Five other people were transported to the hospital, including both of the children, all of whom reportedly suffered serious injuries. While their current conditions are unclear, police apparently believe that the number of fatalities will increase. The driver has been detained, suspected of driving while intoxicated.

The surviving victims of this car accident may face a long road to recovery, resulting in significant medical bills and possibly lost wages. Relatives of the deceased victim will also have to deal with funeral costs. While it is unclear what criminal charges -- if any -- the driver may face, the victims, including surviving family members, have the option of pursuing litigation in a civil court. Many victims of car accidents in California who were able to prove that negligence played a role in their injuries or loss were awarded damages to help manage the financial ramifications of the accident.
