Fatal motorcycle accidents: Father killed by drunk driver

Because of the relative lack of protection provided by motorcycles, most motorcyclists are aware of the potential risks they take when they choose such transportation. As a result, they also ensure they take appropriate precautions to help prevent motorcycle accidents. Unfortunately, the negligent and unexpected actions of a drunk driver often cannot be avoided. In fact, one California family is currently mourning the loss of their loved one after he was allegedly struck by a truck driven by a man who was under the influence of alcohol.

The accident happened one day in March. According to police reports, a 35-year-old man stopped in the entrance of a parking lot before attempting a left turn across the roadway. Unfortunately, a 31-year-old man on a motorcycle struck the sports utility vehicle, throwing him from the motorcycle.

Police say that the motorcyclist died immediately as a result of the injuries he suffered in the accident. The driver of the SUV and his passenger, a minor, were not injured. He now faces multiple charges, including murder as a result of his past history with drunk driving convictions. His bail has been set at $2 million.

The deceased victim left behind a 12-year-old daughter who is now facing life without her father. While family members are requesting help from the public to cover funeral expenses, surviving loved ones may struggle with the financial ramifications of their loss for years to come. Many victims of motorcycle accidents -- including family members in the event of a fatality -- have sought recompense in a California civil court. A verdict in their favor could result in an award of damages that will allow them to focus on their recovery rather than how they will pay their bills.
