Child’s allegations leads to sex crimes charges in California

by | May 12, 2015 | Firm News, Sex Crimes

Anyone who has spent time around children knows of the vast scope of their imagination. In fact, some young children may have a difficult time separating reality from the world they build in their mind. However, police in California have recently arrested a man as a result of a child’s description of sex crimes performed against him. The man now faces felony charges.

The alleged crimes were first brought to the attention of police by the victim’s mother. She claims that the child was having anger issues and frequently getting in trouble at school. When she confronted him about his behavior, he reportedly informed her that he was the victim of sexual abuse at the hands of an upstairs neighbor, a 29-year-old man.

The child claims that the alleged abuse began at the end of 2014 and continued every week, occurring multiple times a week, since then. His mother contacted police as a result of his claims, and the man has been arrested. Police claim that the child was able to provide specific details regarding the abuse. Several items have been removed from the accused man’s apartment, including an i-Pad and computer that police will examine for evidence.

The sex crimes charges against the man are serious. In addition to the possibility of jail time, a conviction would likely force him to become a registered sex offender, which would have additional complications even after his prison time has been served. In all criminal cases, California prosecutors must provide sufficient evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, including that the allegations are not the product of a child’s overactive imagination — a child who may want to avoid the consequences of misbehaving at school.
