California street racers can cause fatal car accidents

by | Mar 10, 2015 | Car Accidents, Firm News

There are many thrill seekers in California. Some seek to satisfy their need for a thrill by parachuting or rock climbing. Unfortunately, others turn to illegal activities, such as street racing, that could lead to fatal car accidents. For example, two spectators are believed to have been killed by a street racer, with a third person seriously injured. The driver of one of the cars believed to have been involved in the race has since been arrested.

The incident occurred in late February. Police reports claim that a 21-year-old male was racing a second driver when multiple spectators were struck. One person died at the scene, and a second was pronounced dead at the hospital. The third victim is listed in stable condition.

Police say that both drivers fled the scene, but the one believed to have struck the spectators has since surrendered to authorities. He has been accused of murder and is being held on $2 million bond. A spokesperson for the police department has reminded people that street racing is both dangerous and illegal.

Unfortunately, two people who may have simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time have paid with their lives. Their deaths could leave their loved ones facing a difficult financial situation as a result of funeral expenses and lost wages. Although criminal charges are not necessary to prove a claim of negligence in a civil suit, a conviction of such charges would support a claim for civil liability. Many victims — or family members in the event of a fatality — of car accidents in California have sought financial relief in a civil court.
