Drunk driving suspected in wrong-way collision

The use of alcohol and other substances can affect an individual’s ability to operate a motor vehicle, while also causing impairment to their judgment, perception and muscle control. With this in mind, it is evident why drinking and driving is potentially far more dangerous than other means of distraction that drivers may encounter. In a recent collision, the driver is suspected of drunk driving after he allegedly entered a California freeway traveling in the wrong direction.

The California Highway Patrol claims that they encountered the collision just minutes after receiving a call from witnesses reporting a vehicle driving north in the southbound lanes. The driver and his passenger crashed head-on into another vehicle driven by a 19-year-old female. The woman was traveling with two companions at the time of the accident.

Both drivers, along with three passengers, were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment for injuries they suffered. One of the passengers in the woman’s vehicle may have been more seriously injured, though the specific details were not reported. Police later arrested the driver of the wrong-way vehicle -- also said to be 19 years of age -- when they suspected that he was under the influence at the time of the crash.

The accused teenager could be held financially responsible for the injuries that the others suffered. The three occupants of the other vehicle, as well as his own passenger, may elect to file personal injury claims against him and the owner of the vehicle he was operating. California residents who have been injured in an accident where drunk driving was a factor can seek a monetary judgment in hopes of recovering the financial losses they have suffered.
