Are stay-at-home spouses responsible for high credit card debt?

A proposed change to existing credit card lending requirements has led to a heated debate among financial advocates in California and elsewhere. Since October 2011, individuals who apply for new credit cards must list their personal income on the application. Previously, applicants could list household income, which allowed spouses who do not work outside of the home to have credit in their own name. The change was implemented to address rising levels of credit card debt.

Bestselling financial advice author files Chapter 7 bankruptcy

In tough economic times, many consumers in California and across the nation struggle to maintain control of their financial circumstances. Business owners and entrepreneurs also face the same struggles, although often on a larger scale. The recent recession has led many individuals to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection. One acclaimed and highly successful author has joined the ranks of Americans who turn to Chapter 7 as a means of reestablishing financial security.

California couple arrested for debt relief scam

The recent arrest of a California couple has placed a spotlight on the issue of consumer scams in relation to bankruptcy. The pair allegedly ran a debt relief business that defrauded consumers of as much as $120,000. The story is a cautionary tale for consumers who are attempting to stave off a bankruptcy filing by looking for a quick fix in the form of debt relief services.

American Express to compensate consumers for past abuse

A recent credit card company settlement may benefit Stockton residents with heavy credit card debt. American Express is set to refund approximately 250,000 customers a sum of $85 million to compensate for multiple violations of relevant consumer laws. According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the company's violations took place from the moment a customer inquired about a card to the moment when a customer was charged fees for overdue debt.

Debt collectors team with local prosecutors to harass consumers

For years, debt collectors have tried to strong-arm consumers into paying credit card debt and other delinquent accounts with threats of jail time. Legal professionals tell their clients to dismiss these threats, since no debt collector has the authority to arrest a debtor. However, the threat is a bit more frightening when it appears to come from law enforcement itself. Believe it or not, this very situation occurs on a regular basis in approximately 300 U.S. communities, some of which are right here in California.
